Liverpool FC took advantage of Manchester City's period of weakness!

The Reds celebrated a well-deserved 2:0 victory in their head-to-head clash on Sunday. Cody Gakpo (12th) and Mohamed Salah (78th/penalty) scored. After eleven wins from 13 rounds, Liverpool are already eleven points ahead of the struggling defending champions. Man City are only fifth with 23 points. The two London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea are nine points behind in first place.

Liverpool started the Premier League clash at Anfield Road with a lot of pressure, and Gakpo's 1-0 was a goal with a message. The Dutchman ran onto Salah's cross in an ideal position. Virgil van Dijk narrowly missed making it 2-0 (19'), the defender having already headed against the bar before taking the lead. The visitors had hardly any attacking moves and once again revealed unusual weaknesses in their fourth league defeat in a row.

City coach Pep Guardiola, who had only recently extended his contract until June 2027, was often puzzled at the line. His team was without the injured midfielders Rodri and Mateo Kovacic. Despite their inferiority, the Citizens stayed in the game because Arne Slot's team missed the overdue second goal until the 78th minute.

Gakpo and Salah initially missed great opportunities, but Salah converted the penalty that was awarded after a foul on Luiz Diaz. The Egyptian already has eleven goals and seven assists to his name - his goalscoring average has never been better in Liverpool kit. Kevin De Bruyne could have made it exciting again a little later after Van Dijk lost possession, but was denied by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Chelsea third after home win
Chelsea are third after a 3-0 home win over Aston Villa - level with second-placed Arsenal. Both London clubs are nine points behind Liverpool. Nicolas Jackson (7th), Enzo Fernandez (36th) and Cole Palmer (83rd) secured the home win at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United celebrated a 4-0 win over Everton on coach Ruben Amorim's league home debut. Doubles from Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee marked the Red Devils' highest league win since a 5-1 victory over Leeds United in 2021. United are ninth in the table after 13 games. Tottenham have one point more after a 1-1 draw against Fulham.
