New York is introducing a traffic congestion charge of nine dollars (8.64 euros) per day for its world-famous Manhattan borough. The metropolis is counting on billions in revenue.

The US Department of Transportation gave the green light on Friday for the charge, which is to be levied from January 5 next year.

Accordingly, the New York City Council will charge a toll of nine dollars during the day for cars traveling south of 60th Street in Manhattan.

The metropolis is expecting billions of dollars in revenue to be spent on local public transport and to reduce private traffic.

A congestion charge of this kind is being used for the first time in the USA.
