Apartment fire in Vienna: man (61) dies in flames

One man was rescued from the burning apartment and died at the scene.

An apartment fire in Vienna came to a tragic end on Sunday. The emergency services were called to the apartment building in Leopoldstadt at around 6 pm. A man was rescued from the flames, but he could only be confirmed dead. 

Police, the professional fire department and the professional rescue service were alerted to the apartment fire in the apartment building in Untere Augartenstraße. A neighbor raised the alarm when he noticed the smell of burning.

Man discovered lifeless in apartment
After the Vienna Fire Brigade managed to extinguish the fire, a 61-year-old resident was found lifeless in the apartment. He was immediately rescued using the turntable ladder and handed over to the Vienna Professional Rescue Team. Resuscitation measures were started immediately. But in vain - the emergency doctor determined the death of the fire victim (61) on the spot. 

During the operation, Obere Donaustraße and Untere Augartenstraße had to be partially closed in the affected area. Streetcar line 31 was cut short. 

The Vienna State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire. There are currently no indications that the fire was caused by a third party.
