Hollywood star Drew Barrymore (49) has undergone a mammogram in front of the cameras as part of her talk show to raise awareness of breast cancer prevention. 

The actress had her annual examination televised to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month to emphasize the importance of regular check-ups.

In an Instagram clip for the show, which airs in the US on Wednesday (October 9), Barrymore can be seen in the mammogram machine as she humorously remarks: "I've never had a mammogram in high heels. This is different ... But I think it's also a healing experience."

Awkward seconds can save lives
The talk show host took the opportunity to encourage her viewers to take advantage of preventative screenings: "Just a few uncomfortable seconds can save lives," she explained, pointing out how important it is not to let irrational fears hold us back. "We tend to develop catastrophic scenarios in our heads. I don't know about you, but I diagnose myself with something bad every day. We'd better not do that."

With this candid appearance, Barrymore wants to show how important it is to take responsibility for your own health.
