Woodworking is a vocation for Markus (15)

As a budding carpentry technician, Markus (15) not only manufactures wooden products for the production of foundry models, but also controls and monitors the entire production process right through to the finished product.

Although Markus has retained his love of music, the 15-year-old opted for a technical apprenticeship after leaving secondary music school: "I wanted to learn a trade, so after a two-day taster I decided to do an apprenticeship at voestalpine Giesserei Traisen," explains the carpentry technician apprentice from the district of Lilienfeld. 

"In my apprenticeship, carpentry and IT systems go hand in hand. In addition to the basics of woodworking, I also learn about various organizational and technical areas."

He has no regrets about taking this path, quite the opposite: "The apprenticeship is really good for me, it even exceeds my expectations". His fields of activity in the first year of his apprenticeship range from processing wood - sawing, molding, sanding and so on - to receiving wood deliveries and producing foundry models.

Even in his free time, Markus has been "working" on and with wood in his father's workshop at home since he was a child. He has already made tables, chairs and vehicles for model railroads. In this respect, Markus is now also learning for life: "Up to now, everything at home has been 'learning by doing', now I'm learning the various techniques from scratch."

Around 140 young professionals are being trained at the voestalpine sites in Lower Austria. There are around 20 apprenticeships to choose from.
