North Korea's head of state Kim Jong-un has praised the internationally isolated country's successful footballers at the U20 Women's World Cup. At a reception at the headquarters of the Workers' Party in Pyongyang, the ruler congratulated the team, which was successful in Colombia, on its successes over "top teams" such as the USA, Brazil and Austria, as the state news agency KCNA reported on Tuesday.

North Korea won the U20 World Cup for the third time with a 1:0 win over Japan the previous week. The Koreans had beaten Austria 5-2 in the round of 16.

On their return home last Saturday, the players were celebrated in a parade by thousands of people on the streets.
