Woman publicly flogged in Afghanistan

A woman in Afghanistan has been convicted of adultery and publicly flogged.

Following their return to power, the Taliban in Afghanistan reintroduced public punishments in August 2021 - despite criticism from human rights organizations and the United Nations. These include executions and floggings for crimes such as murder, robbery or adultery.

Now a woman had to endure this martyrdom in public because of an affair. She had also tried to run away from home, as the Supreme Court of the country's ruling Islamist Taliban announced. The adulteress was tortured with 30 public lashes.

The punishment had already been carried out on Sunday in the northern Afghan province of Farjab in the presence of Taliban representatives and local residents. The woman also received a six-month prison sentence.

According to the Supreme Court, two other people had to endure the painful lashes on Sunday in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar. The reason for this was alleged homosexual acts. They are also said to have received prison sentences of one year each.
