At around 7.30 pm, a 32-year-old man was lying in bed smoking a cigarette in his apartment in the municipality of Micheldorf, district of St. Veit an der Glan. "He extinguished the cigarette in the ashtray, which was also in the bed," said the police.

Neighbor noticed the smell of smoke
After some time, the man noticed that the mattress had started to glow and carried it into the bathroom to extinguish it. He then drove to work. At around 9 p.m., however, his neighbor noticed a strong smell of smoke and alerted the fire department.

The Micheldorf and Althofen fire brigades and 35 firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the mattress, which had flared up again, and remove it from the apartment. The fire was discovered in time and did not spread to other furnishings.
