Pensioner (80) fell asleep at the wheel while driving

Microsleep may have caused a spectacular traffic accident in the city of Wels early Saturday afternoon. An 80-year-old crashed into a parked car with full force and without braking. The man was apparently partially trapped under the car with his legs. Rescuing the injured man proved difficult.

An 80-year-old man from Wels was driving a car eastbound on Kolpingstraße in Wels on Saturday. According to his own statements, the car left the road at around 1.30 p.m. due to the driver dozing off for a second and collided with a kerb.

As a result, the car was thrown into the air and collided with a car parked on the left-hand side of the road, causing considerable damage.

But that was not all: after the collision, the pensioner's vehicle overturned and came to a standstill lying on its side across the road.

The man was seriously injured and trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed from the car by firefighters. His legs were partially trapped in the area of the passenger window.

The 80-year-old was taken to the hospital in Wels after receiving initial emergency medical treatment. Firefighters put the car back on its wheels. Both damaged vehicles were totaled. Kolpingstraße was closed in the area of the accident for around one and a half hours.
