Greek coast guard shoots migrant dead

A migrant on a boat off the Greek vacation island of Symi has been killed by shots fired by the coast guard. It was reported that he had tried to ram the coast guard boat.

The incident occurred when a speedboat was spotted off the Turkish coast. The coast guard wanted to stop it, reported Greek radio (ERT). The helmsman of the migrant boat then tried to ram the coastguard boat.

The officers are said to have fired shots in response. When it stopped, a migrant was found with no signs of life. He was therefore taken to hospital on the island of Rhodes. However, only his death could be determined there.

13 people arrested
13 people who were on the boat with the man were arrested. The public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the incident. According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, around 25,000 migrants had crossed from Turkey to Greece by August 18.
