Derelict construction site blocks lane

Building materials have been stored directly on the road for over a year. The site was not cleared even when the renovation of the building was suddenly halted.

An apartment building near the busy Ruthnergasse / Siemensstraße junction in Floridsdorf has been undergoing renovation since March 1 of last year. The building materials for this are being stored on part of the roadway.

"Due to a lack of space, there was no other option than to merge the two lanes into one. And for better or worse, the road users understood this measure," explains Gabriele Schellig, chairwoman of the private neighborhood association Ruthnergasse. But this construction site has now been lying idle for months, not a stone has been moved. Nevertheless, the lane has not been reopened.

Insolvency as the reason
"The contractor is insolvent, but not the developer," says former district councillor Hansjörg Schimanek. As construction is still not continuing, the magistrate would be obliged to have the construction site equipment removed.

Solution in sight
In response to an inquiry from the "Krone", MA 46 stated that the person who issued the notice had been asked to clear the lane. However, there has recently been a new development: a new construction company has apparently been commissioned. This means that the lane will remain closed, but at least not for nothing.
