Goretzka the problem child? “If he stays, …”

Although Leon Goretzka started in Bayern's last friendly against Grasshoppers Zurich, the 29-year-old had to sit out the cup match against Ulm a few days earlier. The midfielder is not having an easy time at Bayern Munich at the moment, but sporting director Max Eberl still had positive words to say about Goretzka.

"There is no training group two at Bayern Munich. Leon is a great player and played well today," Eberl made clear after the 4-0 win over Grasshoppers. "If he stays, he will be a full member of our squad."

FC Bayern have never spoken badly about Goretzka, the club have simply been transparent about the situation. Difficult for the 57-time Germany team player ... Nevertheless, Goretzka is "a full member of the team". 

The only question is in which position. With the competition in midfield continuing to grow following the signing of Joao Palhinha, the Bochum-born player started in central defense against Zurich. Whether Goretzka's future actually lies in the backline will probably become clear in the coming weeks. In any case, his contract in Munich does not expire until 2026.
