Vogelschiss, Klimakleber: 3000 new Duden words

Around 3,000 new words have been entered in the 29th edition of the Duden. That brings the total to 151,000! The term "Klimakleber" has also made it into the dictionary.(Bild: Krone KREATIV/APA, DUDEN)

The Duden dictionary has once again made a big addition. In its 29th edition, which will be officially published on Tuesday, there are a whopping 3000 new words that show just how lively our language is. Hundreds of old words have been deleted.

If you want to understand the German-speaking world, you can't do without this standard work. The new Duden is not only a guide to correct spelling, but also a mirror of current social developments and language trends, as the publisher recently announced.

Vogelschiss, Coronaleugner, Ukrainekrieg, ...
Terms such as Klimakleber, Coronaleugner, Ukrainekrieg, Balkonkraftwerk, Quetschie (small fruit purees in squeeze bags), Offifant, Vogelschiss, Triggerwarnung (reference to potentially incriminating content) or matchen (matching of things or people) made it into the official German dictionary.

It is striking that more and more Anglicisms are creeping into German usage. In other words, expressions or idioms that have been adopted from the English language.

151,000 entries - a new record!
However, some old-fashioned words such as "Frigidär" - an outdated term for refrigerator - had to make way for these new additions. The Duden now has a total of 151,000 entries. A new record!
