Earthquake of magnitude 7.2 off the eastern Russian coast

A severe earthquake occurred in eastern Russia on Sunday night (21:10 CET). The European Earthquake Monitoring Center (EMSC) registered a magnitude of 7.2 off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Other sources speak of 7.1 or 7.

The epicenter of the quake was located under the Pacific Ocean at a depth of around 51 kilometers. In Russia, it was Sunday morning (7 a.m.) at the time. Experts are monitoring the situation, but at night there was still no information on possible deaths, injuries or damage.

The US Tsunami Center issued a warning for the North Pacific. Tsunamis occur repeatedly, especially in South East Asia. In Europe, Norway is one of the countries at risk.
