Hiker falls to his death on tour to the Zugspitze

Tragic mountain accident on Thursday in the Tyrolean Außerfern: After a hiker failed to return home from a tour to the Zugspitze, his wife raised the alarm. During a search operation, the man's body was discovered in a steep gully.

The hiker, who was apparently from Germany, had set off on his hike to the Zugspitze in the early hours of the morning. He actually wanted to be back home by 1 pm. But he did not return.

"Because he could not be reached by phone either, his wife informed the police. A search operation was then launched," said the investigators.

At 7.20 p.m., the missing man was found lifeless in a steep gully.

Shortly before 7.30 pm, the missing man was finally found lifeless in a steep gully in the area of the so-called Bayernsteig by members of the Ehrwald mountain rescue team. Unfortunately, all help came too late for the man.

The hiker's body was recovered by police helicopter and flown down into the valley. Investigations into the course of the accident are ongoing.
