ÖVP reignites social welfare debate

Just a few days ago, the whole country was discussing Vienna's exorbitant welfare benefits (€4,600 per month) for a Syrian family of nine.

The ÖVP wants to reignite this highly emotive topic for the election campaign and is launching a social media campaign against SPÖ leader Andreas Babler from Monday. The question is being asked: "6800 euros in social welfare for a migrant family without working. Is that fair, Mr. Babler?"

As the "Krone" reported, SPÖ leader Andreas Babler recently presented a "basic child support model" - according to which a migrant family of nine would receive as much as 6800 euros in social welfare. The ÖVP counters: 6.8 million people would therefore earn less than a refugee family.
