Two executions within a few days in Singapore

Two people sentenced to death have been executed in Singapore within the space of a week. On Wednesday, a 59-year-old man was hanged for trafficking at least 35.85 grams of heroin. Last Friday, a 45-year-old man was executed for trafficking less than 37 grams of heroin.

The strict narcotics laws in Singapore provide for the death penalty for drug trafficking of as little as 15 grams of heroin. According to the United Nations and human rights groups, there is no evidence that the death penalty is effective in combating drug-related crime. 

Three people executed since the beginning of the year
According to a count by the AFP news agency, a total of 19 people have been executed since the resumption of executions in 2022. The city state had suspended the death penalty for two years during the coronavirus pandemic - but resumed executions in March 2022.
