Austrians type 29 chat messages a day

Austrians typed 95 billion chat messages into their smartphones in 2023. If the total number is applied to the population, one person will type around 29 chat messages per day

This was reported by Klaus Steinmaurer, Managing Director of the Telecommunications and Postal Services Division at Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH (RTR), on Wednesday. In contrast, only around one billion text messages were sent, an average of one per person every third day.

A total of 3.8 billion emails were sent in Austria in 2023, or just under 430 emails per person per year, according to a press release. The trend of recent years continued for broadband connections in the fixed network, with connections with low bandwidths declining.

Of a total of 2.68 million fixed broadband connections at the end of 2023, 42% were connections with a data rate of over 100 Mbit/s and 36% were connections with a bandwidth of between 30 and 100 Mbit/s. The proportion of fixed broadband connections with fiber optics rose to 11.3% by the end of 2023.
