Ambulance crashes into police car at junction

The driver of an ambulance in Lienz probably disregarded the "give way" sign, resulting in a collision with a police patrol car.

A police patrol from the Lienz police station was on its way to an operation on the Felbertauernstraße (B108) at around 1.28 pm on Friday with its blue lights and siren switched on, as a serious traffic accident with injured persons had occurred in Ainet. 

At the same time, an ambulance from the Lienz emergency services was traveling from Schlossgasse in the direction of Felbertauernstraße, probably disregarding the "give way" traffic sign. The two vehicles eventually collided at the junction. "The 59-year-old driver of the police patrol tried to slow down and swerve, but was no longer able to prevent a collision," according to the East Tyrolean police. 

Two injured and considerable damage to property
Both the police officer at the wheel and his 41-year-old colleague were injured to an undetermined degree as a result of the accident. The 22-year-old driver of the ambulance and an accompanying paramedic were uninjured.

"A breathalyzer test carried out on both drivers was negative," said an officer. There was considerable damage to the emergency vehicles. However, no other people were injured.
