Convertible goes up in flames on the A12 while driving

Two vehicle fires kept fire departments busy in Tyrol: a convertible burst into flames while driving on the A12 Inntalautobahn in the Unterland region. The driver was able to steer the vehicle into a parking lot. And in Matrei am Brenner, the car of a 19-year-old burned out completely.

The fire department was called out on the Inntal freeway near Weer (Schwaz district) in the early hours of Monday afternoon. A 68-year-old local woman was driving her convertible on the A12 in the direction of Kufstein when thick smoke suddenly billowed out of the engine compartment.

Asfinag employees rushed to the scene
The driver reacted with presence of mind and was able to steer the car into a parking lot before it caught fire. Workers from Asfinag launched an initial fire-fighting attack - the Wattens fire department, which had been alerted, then carried out additional extinguishing work. The car was a total loss. The pensioner escaped with a fright, she remained uninjured.

Car on fire after starting problem
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the car of a young local man caught fire in a parking lot in the Schöfens district of Matrei am Brenner. According to the police, the 19-year-old driver had previously tried to start the vehicle, but was unsuccessful.

When the young man then made his way home on foot, he noticed a short time later that his car was on fire. He made an emergency call. The alerted fire department extinguished the car fire.
