Riot in prison in Trieste: Eight injured

Eight people were injured  during a riot in a prison in Trieste on Thursday evening. Inmates had set fire to sheets, towels and mattresses - almost half of the prisoners took part in the riot. 

The "Ernesto Mari" prison houses 260 inmates - it is actually only intended for 150 prisoners. According to the ANSA news agency, the inmates complained about the overcrowding, which makes living conditions in the facility very hard and is exacerbated by the heatwave.

More than 100 inmates eventually took part in the riot on Thursday, which left several people injured. Images show inmates swinging burning sheets out of the windows. The police eventually stormed the building and clashes broke out.

Patients with heart conditions were moved
Five inmates had to be treated after inhaling smoke. According to ANSA, two inmates with heart conditions were transferred outside the prison for security reasons. No one's life is in danger, according to local media reports. Ten ambulances and a paramedic van were deployed. 

The difficult situation in Trieste prison has been reported on several occasions in recent months. Some prisoners complained that they were forced to sleep on the floor on mattresses littered with bedbugs.
