Falls 200 meters into the depths during descent

Salzburg's mountains had already claimed three lives on Saturday, and on Sunday there was another fatality to mourn: a 54-year-old man from Graz fell 200 meters while descending from Kasereck in Lungau and died.

A 54-year-old native of Mauterndorf, who had last lived in Graz, fell over 200 meters fatally at around 1 p.m. while descending from the Kasereck in the Schladminger Tauern. "He was already in the lower part of the ridge," says Hannes Kocher, the Lungau district leader and Tamsweg mountain rescuer. His companion alerted the emergency services.

The team from the Libelle police helicopter attempted to rescue the fatally injured man, but strong foehn winds prevented the approach. Eight mountain rescuers therefore ascended. However, when the weather improved, the helicopter team was able to carry out the rescue. The Martin 1 rescue helicopter team and a total of 20 mountain rescuers from Tamsweg and Mauterndorf were also deployed. The operation ended at 6 pm.

Three people had already had fatal accidents in Salzburg's mountains on Saturday.
