Slipped on the mountain: two women seriously injured

Two German mountaineers suffered serious injuries in alpine accidents on Saturday in the Tyrolean Pitztal and Karwendel mountains. Both women had slipped and fallen. They had to be rescued by helicopter and flown to hospitals.

The accident in the Pitztal occurred in the late afternoon. Three German women who were friends were walking in the municipality of St. Leonhard from the Mauchele Alm via the Almsteig down the valley towards the village of Boden.

Wet ground was their undoing
"To cross a small stream, they chose an alternative route and left the marked path," reported the police. And then it happened: due to the rain, one of the women - a 48-year-old - slipped on the wet ground and was seriously injured.

The seriously injured woman was then rescued using a rope and flown to Zams Hospital by emergency helicopter.

Her companions made an emergency call. "The seriously injured woman was then rescued using a rope and flown to Zams Hospital by emergency helicopter," the investigators continued. The other two alpinists were accompanied down into the valley by the mountain rescue team.

Arm broken on gravel field
Another fatal alpine accident on Saturday in the Karwendel mountains near Absam in the Innsbruck-Land district. During a tour to the Bettelwurfhütte, a 55-year-old German woman slipped on a gravel field and fell. The woman suffered a fracture to her left forearm. 

The seriously injured mountaineer was rescued by the crew of the rescue helicopter and then flown to the regional hospital in Hall.
