“Imagine if there were only white players”

Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens), Vice-President of the German Bundestag, has caused outrage with a post outside of the European Football Championship. Following fierce criticism, she deleted her post shortly afterwards.

After the German national team's 2:0 victory against Hungary on Wednesday evening, the Green politician wrote: "This team is really great. Imagine for a moment that there were only white German players." This triggered a veritable shitstorm.

A few hours later, she rowed back and removed her post. "I'm sorry for the way I worded it. I was upset that 21% of Germans would like it better if there were more 'whites' in the national team. I'm proud of this team and hope that we can still win over the 21%." She also added a picture of DFB defender Jonathan Tah, with a quote from an ARD documentary: "We are Müller, but we are also Tah and Gündogan. And we're all pursuing one goal together."

Nagelsmann shocks
Shortly before the start of the EURO, WDR caused a huge uproar among our neighbors with a survey on the opinions of German soccer fans on topics such as the skin color of players. According to the survey, one in five people in Germany would like to see more white players in the DFB squad.

"I think the question alone is insane that we are asking such a question on public television. I was shocked," scolded national coach Julian Nagelsmann.
