Little Jonas Elian was born much faster than expected in Vienna: A trip to the hospital was no longer possible - and so mom Nike gave birth to her little boy within 45 minutes in her own apartment.

When mom Nike went into labor in the early hours of the morning on 16 May, she sent her husband Marcel for a quiet walk with the dog.

When he returned to their apartment in Floridsdorf, however, it was clear that a trip to hospital was out of the question. "When it became clear that Jonas would be better off being born at home, I felt my heart rate rise to 3,000," says Marcel. He immediately called the ambulance.

"We arrived at the apartment and were surprised to see how far the birth had progressed," recalls paramedic Lisa from the Vienna Samaritans. The mother was already lying on the floor in contractions. The team from the Vienna Professional Rescue Service, who arrived shortly afterwards, quickly realized: "It was no longer possible to transport her to hospital," says emergency paramedic Markus.

Shortly after 5 a.m. - just 45 minutes after the first contraction - little Jonas was born at 48 centimetres and 2600 grams in his parents' apartment. Both mom and son were in good health and were taken to the nearest clinic.

An unforgettable experience
Two weeks later, the family - the couple already have a daughter - thanked the Vienna Professional Rescue Service and the Vienna Samaritans in person. Together they reviewed the exciting mission. For both paramedic Markus and emergency doctor Fritz, this was their first pre-hospital birth - and therefore an unforgettable experience.
