“Weapon test” triggered a major police manhunt

Suddenly a shot was heard in Klagenfurt on Saturday morning. A man had apparently fired a handgun.

The police were alerted at around 9.20 a.m. on Saturday because a man had fired a shot from a handgun. "After a short, intensive search by several patrols in the city area, the 27-year-old man was stopped in the Ursulinengasse area based on the available personal description," the police reported.

The officers searched the man and found a handgun including ammunition. Then the all-clear was given: "The weapon turned out to be a blank-firing pistol with blank-firing ammunition." The man was then taken to the St. Ruprechterstraße police station.

The interrogation of the 27-year-old revealed that he had purchased the weapon legally and wanted to check its functionality. "A shot had been fired in the process. A provisional weapons ban was issued against the 27-year-old and the weapon was confiscated," the police concluded.
