The avalanche of traffic on Whit Saturday hit Kuchl and Golling again with full force. Both local leaders are angry.

"The main road has been a single column since the night" - this is how Golling's SPÖ mayor Martin Dietrich described the situation in the middle of the village on Saturday afternoon. The tunnel construction sites caused a huge traffic jam this weekend. Holidaymakers dodged via Grödig, Anif and every possible route on the highway. Motorhomes even camped in a discount store parking lot in Hallein. During the day, the exit barriers only helped to a limited extent.

"That was an extreme event. The traffic jam was much worse than usual," says Dietrich. Like Dietrich, Kuchl's ÖVP local leader Thomas Freylinger and the Salzburg SPÖ are also calling for a toll exemption so that the police can also send holidaymakers onto the highway.

"Here, not even the emergency services could get through to the elderly. That can't be right," says Freylinger indignantly. The fire department was on standby at the fire station to avoid being stuck in a traffic jam. The navigation systems would display alternative routes so quickly that the municipality would not be able to keep up with closures.

In Golling, hairdresser Marina Mayr put customers on the road as a test. "We worked indoors, of course," she says with a smile. Her wish is "not to badmouth Golling. There are so many beautiful things to experience here."
