"Klasse Job" campaign
Almost 12,000 applicants for only 7000 teacher positions
At the end of April, the Ministry of Education advertised around 7100 teaching positions for the coming school year. Over 11,800 people applied. Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) is delighted with the success of his "Klasse Job" campaign. However, the fact that there are more applicants than posts does not mean that all 109,000 vacant teaching hours have already been filled.
Last year, there were also significantly more applicants than vacancies. However, as always, one problem is the distribution. There were too many applications for many positions, none for others, a surplus of applicants for some subjects and too few for others. The application procedures and allocations to the individual locations are currently underway. Every year, attempts are made to "redirect" applicants who have been unsuccessful at one school to schools with vacancies.
Converted to full-time teaching positions, there are 5,000 positions to be filled, with a total of one third being advertised as part-time positions. This corresponds to the current part-time ratio of teaching staff, which is slightly higher in the west at 4 out of 10 teachers. Around 120,000 teachers teach throughout Austria.
