Trial in Innsbruck
Local politician demolished his ex’s car?
Unrequited love sometimes ends dramatically, and not just in the movies: one night in August 2023, a Tyrolean local politician (48) allegedly grabbed a hammer and smashed the front and rear windows of his ex-girlfriend's car. Now the man is on trial.
Was the 48-year-old really the one who struck out of anger or jealousy? In any case, he vehemently denied the crime. "She was jealous and the relationship developed in a toxic direction", explained the accused in the Innsbruck Regional Court. The ex had also sent him a cryptic message with a photo of the broken windows, stating that he now had this "from his fornication".
Acquittal in case of doubt
The man's defense lawyer finally outlined two variants: Either it really was his client who had been under the influence of pills that day, or the woman had smashed the windows herself to frame her ex for the crime. It was not possible to say "with absolute certainty" who the perpetrator really was, said Judge Paul Menardi, explaining the acquittal in case of doubt.
