And it's getting warmer
Hottest April in 140 years in Hong Kong
Last month, Hong Kong recorded its warmest April since weather records began in 1884. According to the Meteorological Administration of the Chinese Special Administrative Region, the average temperature for the month was 26.4 degrees Celsius.
"Summer is not here yet, but April was already record-breaking hot," the authority added.
The inhabitants of the subtropical metropolis of millions have increasingly suffered from extreme heat in recent years, with dozens of heat records being broken.
On April 27, Hong Kong also set new daily records for the highest average temperature (28.8 degrees) and the highest low (27.7 degrees), according to the weather authority. In the years 1991 to 2020, the average daily temperature in April was between 21.1 and 25.6 degrees.
According to the weather authority, this year's record-breaking April followed an "exceptionally warm" winter from December to February and a March "that was significantly warmer than usual".
Overall, "above-average" temperatures are expected for the current year.
