Spain’s Prime Minister Sánchez suspends his official duties

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has surprisingly announced that he is suspending his official duties for the time being. The background to this is likely to be allegations of corruption against his wife. 

He must "pause and reflect", he wrote on Wednesday in a letter published on the short messaging service X (formerly Twitter). "I urgently need an answer to the question of whether it is worth it (...) whether I should continue to lead the government or renounce this honor."

A court had previously announced the opening of a preliminary investigation into Sánchez's wife Begoña Gómez. The investigation is to examine whether she is guilty of influence peddling and corruption in private business dealings.
