After "breaking a taboo"
Renewed stadium ban for women in Iran?
The stadium ban on women at soccer matches in Iran, which was lifted just a few weeks ago, is reportedly to be reintroduced. The Iranian Football League has ordered the city of Tabris to do so, according to several media reports. The presence of women in the Jadegar-Imam stadium of the club Traktor-Sazi had led to "repulsive incidents", they said.
It was initially unclear whether the decree only applied to the city of Tabris or the entire country. Traktor-Sazi is one of the most popular clubs in Iran with hundreds of thousands of fans, including many women.
Hug for goalkeeper
According to observers, an incident a week ago is said to be the reason for the decision. During a first division match between Esteghal Tehran and Aluminum Arak, a female supporter stormed onto the pitch and hugged goalkeeper Hossein Hosseini.
"Breaking a taboo"
In Iran, it is generally forbidden to touch women who are not part of the immediate family. The incident was therefore considered a "breach of taboo". For Hosseini, this resulted in a fine of the equivalent of almost 7,000 euros and a one-match ban.
