Even one of Venice's most important landmarks has not been spared the effects of ageing building materials. Pieces of reinforced concrete have now fallen from the bell tower - although there is said to have been no immediate danger.

The material, which dates back to 1902 and was considered revolutionary at the time, was used in the reconstruction of the inner frame of the spire, reported the daily newspaper "Il Gazzettino" on Wednesday.

However, the architect responsible for the safety of the cathedral, Mario Piana, ruled out any immediate or medium-term danger.

Existing structure to be secured
"However, we want to gather all the necessary information to plan consolidation measures to secure the reinforced concrete used at the beginning of the 20th century for another 100 years," said Piana. An investigation into the condition of the spire has been ordered.

The foundations of the bell tower, which were reinforced with titanium inserts a dozen years ago, will also be inspected.

A destination for millions of people
St. Mark's Basilica is a symbol of Venice and was the central state shrine of the Republic of Venice until its demise in 1797. It has been the cathedral of the Patriarch of Venice since 1807.

Every year, millions of people from all over the world visit the tourist magnet to experience its magnificent mosaics, works of art and religious significance.
