Liverpool have suffered a particularly bitter setback in the title race for the English soccer championship! Coach Jürgen Klopp's Reds were surprisingly beaten 2-0 (0-1) in the derby against Everton on Wednesday.
This leaves Liverpool three points behind leaders Arsenal, who have a much better goal difference, with four games to go before the end of the season. Liverpool almost have to bury their title dreams, as champions Manchester City have just one point less with two fewer games played.
Everton secured their first derby home win in 14 years at Goodison Park with goals from Jarrad Branthwaite (27) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (58), both from set-pieces. The "Toffees", who achieved the much-desired escape from the relegation battle, celebrated a deserved success in the end. Liverpool were unlucky with a Luis Diaz shot off a bar.
Erling Haaland not ready for game at Brighton
Manchester City, meanwhile, will still be without Erling Haaland. The 23-year-old goalscorer is not ready for the game at Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday (9pm), said coach Pep Guardiola on Wednesday. The ex-Salzburger suffered a muscle injury in the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid last Wednesday.
Haaland had already missed last Saturday's 1-0 win over Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final. However, Guardiola said the Norwegian international could be available for Sunday's game at Nottingham Forest. With 20 league goals, Haaland is the Citizens' top scorer and they have everything in their own hands in the race with Arsenal and Liverpool.
