ATP tournament in Madrid
Thiem against Kokkinakis – LIVE from 3 pm
Dominic Thiem's hopes of a ticket to the main draw of the Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid were dashed!
After his opening win over Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves, the Lower Austrian was clearly beaten 1:6, 3:6 by Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the 2nd and final qualifying round on Tuesday. This means that Austria will only be represented in the singles of the clay court tournament by Sebastian Ofner, who will start against Pedro Cachin.
1:6 reads more clearly than the match itself
Thiem conceded an early break in the first set at 0:2 and another at 1:5, but both service games were hard-fought and could have gone either way. The result of 1:6 reads more clearly than the course of the match.
At the start of the second set, Thiem held all the aces at 1:0 and 0:40, but lost the game after three missed break chances and Kokkinakis then used his first opportunity to break for 4:3. The player from Lichtenwörth then had another chance to break back immediately. The match was now over.
Thiem gave away his last service game to zero. After a little less than an hour and a half, the 30-year-old ÖTV player's defeat in the duel with the 28-year-old world number 93 was sealed.
