Pit bulls attack toddler in Italy: Boy dead

In Italy, a 13-month-old boy has been attacked by two pit bulls. During the attack in Campolongo near Salerno, the toddler was so badly injured that he died.

The dogs belonged to a friend of the baby's mother, who was also injured. She was admitted to hospital with deep bite wounds, but her life was not in danger, according to Italian media reports.

Fatal dog attacks are not uncommon
Fatal dog bite attacks occur time and again in Italy. Most recently, a jogger was attacked and killed by three Rottweilers during a run near Rome in February. The 39-year-old man was mauled to death by the dogs in a park in the small Italian town of Manziana. 

A similar case occurred in Upper Austria in October 2023: a 60-year-old female jogger was attacked by American Staffordshire terriers and died. The dog owner was sentenced to 15 months in prison for grossly negligent homicide.
