The 52-year-old from the Wels-Land district was out on his mountain bike on a tour in Ebensee am Traunsee at around 3 pm on Saturday. The accident happened on the Karl-Heissl-Trail.
The athlete fell around 25 meters down a slope and, according to the police, was left seriously injured in the dry stream bed below.
Difficult rescue
Fortunately, there were witnesses to the accident who immediately called the emergency services. While the rescue helicopter prepared a rescue using a rope, mountain rescuers climbed up to the 52-year-old and administered first aid. The rescue operation was made more difficult by the rough terrain. In the end, the athlete was taken to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Gmunden.
