Fierce criticism:
“Spit in the face of the Champions League”
These are very harsh words, the likes of which have rarely been heard from a so-called "expert": Frenchman Christophe Dugarry, 1998 world champion, took PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe to task after the Champions League quarter-final first leg against FC Barcelona (2:3). "You spat in the face of the Champions League," raged the 52-year-old.
"I'm not going to attack the footballer, that would be too easy. (...) I want to criticize the man Mbappe, who showed the worst soccer and the worst attitude a top player can have last night," Dugarry said on "RMC Sport". Mbappe also has "the right to play badly", said the former international. "But the boy's behavior and attitude were simply scandalous. It was a scandal for soccer, a lack of respect, a betrayal of his fans, his teammates and all the people who appreciate him. You spat in the face of the Champions League." Rumms! Fierce words ...
Mbappe largely disappeared from the scene against Barca on Tuesday. The usually dangerous striker fired just one shot on goal and failed four out of five dribbles.
Dugarry: "In a quarter-final that you supposedly dream of winning with your club. Allegedly. (...) The attitude he showed in that game was an absolute disgrace."
"I didn't think..."
Nevertheless, the expert hopes for a turnaround in the second leg. "I believe that the boy will pull himself together and lead his team to victory. I hope so from the bottom of my heart. But I didn't think the boy could fall so far."
