St. Pölten in party mode after historic double
Champagne showers, grapes of joy, a coach being thrown into the air by her players: After winning the championship for the first time, St. Pölten's women's basketball team broke all the dams. Manager Stefan Worenz evaluates "European Cup dream".
The "Wolves" won 71:64 at home against Graz on Sunday, thus ending the final series early with an overall score of 3:0. "We worked hard for this success," beamed SKN coach Lana Petrovic, "I'm super proud of the girls, I think we wanted it more in the end."
While Anna Kolyandrova grabbed a nice souvenir and dismantled the basket net, team-mate Nina Krisper could hardly believe her luck after winning the double. Understandable! As you know, the St. Pölten women's club was only founded a year ago. "I'm just speechless. It wasn't even certain whether I would play," said Krisper, who went into the match in a state of pain. "The pain is limited, the feelings of happiness outweigh the pain."
The same goes for SKN women's manager Stefan Worenz, who now has to weigh up whether they will be on the international stage for the first time next season. "The Euro Cup would be a dream, but also a financial outlay. We'll check what's possible," he says, noting a few hurdles.
"For many, that would be a problem in terms of time. We almost only have semi-professionals." But whose performances would have earned them a place in the concert of the greats...
