0:6! Ajax Amsterdam concedes historic defeat

The crisis-ridden Dutch soccer club Ajax Amsterdam suffered a debacle at Feyenoord Rotterdam on Sunday. The record champions went down 6-0 (0-3) at the reigning champions, who were missing defensive boss Gernot Trauner through injury, and slipped to sixth place in the table. "History", wrote Rotterdam, second in the Eredivisie table, on X. For Ajax, it was the heaviest defeat in the so-called De Klassieker.

Igor Paixao (34./66.), Yankuba Minteh (35./56.), Dávid Hancko (45.+2) and Quinten Timber (62.) completed the half-dozen for Feyenoord, who are nine points behind PSV Eindhoven in second place in the league. It was Amsterdam's second bitter defeat against Feyenoord this season, having already lost the scandalous first leg 4-0. Last September, the match in Amsterdam was abandoned due to rioting by Ajax fans, although visiting fans had not even been allowed in. The game continued a few days later without spectators.

"We were inferior on all fronts"
Ajax parted company with coach Maurice Steijn last October after a disastrous start to the season. Interim coach John van't Schip, who led Ajax back to the top, had recently announced his departure after the season. After Sunday's game, he said: "We were inferior on all fronts."
