Vienna-based boxer Nicole Wesner is no longer world champion after ten (!) years. The 46-year-old lost her WBF lightweight belt to Nina Pavlovic from Serbia, who is 20 years her junior.

If you weren't familiar with the Serbian boxer Nina Pavlovic at the InterContinental Hotel in Vienna, the 26-year-old introduced herself straight away: After just a few seconds, she sent Nicole Wesner to the ropes with a hook. Wesner also wavered briefly in round two, before the 46-year-old made her mark for the first time in round three and seemed to get used to her opponent's unconventional style.

From then on, it was a bloody fight with open sights, in which Wesner repeatedly had to take a swing from Pavlovic, wavering. "Keep your guard up", her coach shouted almost desperately. As the match went on, the German took more and more punches, while the 20-year-old simply seemed more determined on this evening. So it came as it had to: Nina Pavlovic was crowned the new world champion.

"My eardrums burst in the first or second round, all I could hear was a buzzing sound and I couldn't hear my coach," said Wesner, explaining her defeat. But the Cologne native is taking it in her stride: "We have a re-match clause." Nevertheless, the veteran is not thinking about ending her career.
