Drama in the Basque Country
Horrific mass crash takes superstars out of the race
Serious incident at the Tour of the Basque Country in Spain: On the 7th stage from Etxarri Aranatz to Legutio, numerous cycling aces were involved in a catastrophic mass crash, including Primoz Roglic, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel!
One of the victims taken away by ambulance was Tour de France winner Vingegaard. The Dane and the overall leader Roglic, who had already crashed the day before, came off the road in an inconspicuous right-hand bend of a descent and hit a concrete water channel.
Cycling stars required emergency medical treatment
Former world champion Evenepoel avoided this in an artistic manner, but still fell and, according to initial information, suffered a broken collarbone. Vingegaard, who, like others, had been lying injured for several minutes, was taken away on an ambulance with a neck brace after receiving emergency medical treatment. Like Vingegaard, Australian Jay Vine had to be taken to hospital.
Stage neutralized after mass crash
Roglic was spared more serious injuries and left the scene of the accident in a team car with his thumb up. The two Austrian pros Felix Gall and Gregor Mühlberger were not involved in the accident. The Tour of the Basque Country is over for both Vingegaard and Evenepoel. A few minutes after the mass crash, the stage was only continued in neutral for the remaining 35 kilometers to Legutio.
The accident was caused by two riders who slipped off independently of each other in a right-hand bend, triggering the fatal mass crash orgy.
As can be seen in the live TV broadcast or a Twitter video, numerous cycling aces at least stumbled in the aftermath - or landed more or less heavily on the asphalt, in the ditch or even in the adjacent forest.
