Fire breaks out
Ferry to Thai vacation island on fire
On Thursday morning (local time), a ferry on its way to the popular Thai vacation island of Koh Tao caught fire (see video above). According to reports, the fire broke out in the engine room a few kilometers from the dock. Around 100 people were on board at the time.
Some of them suffered mild smoke inhalation. Several of the 97 passengers jumped into the sea and were rescued by boats that rushed to the scene. Photos and videos showed the ship on fire. The ferry, which was also carrying eleven crew members, was en route from Surat Thani on the mainland to Koh Tao at the time of the fire.
Many tourists on board
Koh Tao is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Gulf of Thailand. It is particularly popular between March and June, as whale sharks often pass by in the sea. According to the report, there were also many foreigners on board the ferry. According to the Foreign Ministry, there were no people from Austria among them.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
