Cruelty to animals: do we need tougher penalties?
Animal cruelty that comes to public attention always leads to an outcry in our society, most recently in this case. These are acts that cause unnecessary suffering, pain or harm to animals. In this context, there are often calls for harsher punishments. However, this could also have far-reaching consequences in the context of so-called livestock farming.
According to the law: "Animals are not things; they are protected by special laws." It also states: "Anyone who cruelly mistreats an animal or causes it unnecessary suffering is liable to a custodial sentence of up to one year or a fine of up to 360 daily rates." But are these penalties sufficient? In terms of public awareness, tougher penalties for animal cruelty could possibly also lead to a more critical attitude towards industrial animal exploitation. After all, animals often suffer in the course of this too.
How do you personally view the status of animals in our society? Do you think the distinction between farm animals and pets is logical and understandable? In your opinion, what problems could arise as a result, including in relation to cruelty to animals? How could society be better educated about the rights and welfare of animals?
