The former shopping street is to become a promenade - benefiting local residents and businesses in the long term. The multi-year reconstruction work is now starting.  

For 35 years, Äußere Mariahilfer Straße has lain dormant - sometimes the ceiling has perhaps been lifted. Now it is to be slowly brought out of its coma in a process lasting several years. The unattractive thoroughfare is being rebuilt in three sections.

Citizens get more space
The core elements: in future, it will be a one-way street leading out of the city, will have a two-way cycle path, sidewalks up to five meters wide with integrated green elements, 19 new trees in the first section alone, plenty of green space, seating and cooling elements. Planning Councillor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) sums it up: "We are pursuing a holistic, climate-friendly approach here." Incidentally, the experts do not see any displacement effect or disadvantages for other streets due to the elimination of a lane.

The timetable
Work between the Gürtel and Clementinengasse will start in summer. The work will last until summer 2025, followed by the second section up to Anschützgasse. Section 3 (up to Schlossallee) is dependent on ÖBB and the progress of the connecting railroad. It is therefore not yet possible to give an exact date for the redesign. Incidentally, public transport will not be affected. 

The costs
The costs for the first section amount to 8.5 million euros. There are synergy effects with other city departments that are using the conversion for work on the district heating, electricity or water supply network.
