Shock for mom of 5
Loan book lost – Texas woman faces imprisonment
When she went to renew her driver's license, a mother of five in Texas got the shock of her life. Because the officer informed Kaylee Morgan that there was a warrant out for her arrest. For theft of government property. It turned out that the "felon" had forgotten to return a borrowed book to the public library. The 34-year-old is now even facing prison.
On the donation website "GoFundMe", Morgan revealed that she had regularly borrowed books from the Navasota Public Library in Grimes County and always returned them on time. Because her last pregnancy brought serious complications, the expectant mother moved to Houston with her husband and four children - because the medical care was better there. According to Morgan, a loan book went missing somewhere between the old and new homes during the move in March 2023.
Reminders did not arrive at new address
The bedridden Morgan was unaware of this and never thought about the book again. Not even after the birth: "I was sure that my husband had returned it. I didn't get any reminders from the library either - because they didn't have my new address."
Texan woman can't afford high fine
To clear up the whole misunderstanding, Morgan appeared with her youngest child in Grimes County District Court, a four-hour drive away. She told the judge what had happened and offered to replace the book. The jurist showed no empathy: "She snapped at me that I could save my excuses and then fined me 600 dollars. I told her that we didn't have that much money with five children." Whereupon the judge set her a deadline. Failure to pay could result in jail.
In desperation, Morgan started an online fundraising campaign with the headline: "Mom faces jail time for late library book". The campaign has already raised almost 2,000 dollars. Morgan has already found a lawyer who will take on the case - to pay him, she needs 3000 dollars, she writes on gofundme.com.
