Styrian Sounds 2024
Festival for local pop celebrates its 10th birthday
Offering the Styrian pop scene a stage - this was the mission with which the "Styrian Sounds" festival once started. After difficult coronavirus years, it has been celebrating success again since 2022. This year, the 10th edition of the festival will take place from 11 to 13 April at the ppc in Graz.
Several hundred bands and DJs are active in Styria: "And the regional scene doesn't have to shy away from international comparisons these days, quite the opposite", says Dietmar Tschmelak, who founded the "Styrian Sounds" festival. "Until the pandemic, we were able to attract more and more visitors every year," he says. Corona then brought the festival to its knees for two years and it was not entirely clear whether it would be possible to restart. But the public's interest was undiminished: in 2022, the festival switched from fall to spring and was completely sold out. The success was repeated in 2023 and the same is planned for this year.
With timpani and trumpets
The anniversary edition will open on April 11 "with timpani and lots of trumpets", promises Tschmelak, as the Graz brass collective Buena Banda will be on stage. And another anniversary will be celebrated at the festival: The Incredible Staggers are celebrating their 20th anniversary - Tschmelak calls the retro combo from Graz "one of the most influential Styrian bands of the last two decades". They will also be presenting new songs for the first time since 2010 at the "Styrian Sounds" gig.
But the festival also has plenty of exciting things to offer beyond the anniversaries: a total of 30 bands, solo artists and DJs will be performing on the two stages of the ppc in Graz over three days. These include prominent acts such as the band Salo with roots in southern Styria, which is currently being celebrated from Vienna to Berlin. Or the trio Sharktank with rapper Mile from Weiz, who have been nominated for an "Amadeus Award" this year.
Numerous local bands will also be presenting new albums at the festival - including Grand Hotel Schilling, Sladek, Fette Fete and Coinflip Cutie.
Sample from Upper Austria
And once again this year, there will be a star guest from another province: Upper Austrian Miriam Hufnagl has made a name for herself with hits such as "Under Water" under the stage name AVEC. She is currently working on a new album and will be giving the first samples at the concert in Graz.
All in all, a three-day music party in the best Styrian style awaits at Styrian Sounds. Tickets and festival passes are still available. All information about the program can be found here
