Easter fire with a bad ending: pigsty on fire
An unregistered Easter fire had dangerous consequences on Holy Saturday in Deutschfeistritz (district of Graz-Umgebung). The farm owner (58) had left it unattended after supposedly burning it down - and the roof of his pigsty caught fire. He had probably underestimated the strong wind.
At around 3 p.m., the 58-year-old had started an Easter bonfire on his farm in Deutschfeistritz - but without registration and only 20 meters away from the pigsty. He had probably underestimated the danger and left the fire unattended when he thought it had burnt down.
But the strong southerly wind threw a spanner in the works: sparks flew onto the roof of his pigsty. Suddenly, several of the building's wooden beams were ablaze. When he discovered the fire, he immediately started to extinguish it himself and called the emergency services.
Four fire departments arrived with 70 firefighters to prevent the worst from happening. But the fire was brought under control before they arrived. They only had to carry out extinguishing work. The amount of damage has not yet been determined and the farm owner will be reported to the police.
