A new round in the "chainsaw trial" involving former world-class goalkeeper Jens Lehmann. The appeal proceedings are due to start in September. According to a report in "Bild", Lehmann will have to stand trial again in the fall.

A German court sentenced Lehmann to a heavy fine in December. On Friday, the Starnberg district court imposed 210 daily rates of 2,000 euros each for damage to property, insult and attempted fraud - a total of 420,000 euros.

The accusations against the 54-year-old centered around a neighbor dispute. The public prosecutor's office accused him of using a chainsaw to break into his neighbor's newly built garage on Lake Starnberg in Upper Bavaria and sawing through a roof beam.

Lehmann had become the celebrated goalkeeper at the 2006 World Cup in Germany - above all thanks to his brilliant performance in the penalty shoot-out against Argentina in the quarter-finals. As an active player, he played for FC Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund and FC Arsenal in London, among others. In the 1997 UEFA Cup final, he contributed to Schalke's victory against Inter Milan by saving a penalty in the penalty shoot-out.
