Crime: “The water is up to our necks”

The 2023 crime statistics show an increase of 8.2 percent in crimes in Austria, with 1447 crimes reported per day. 45 percent of suspects are of foreign origin. Despite a successful clearance rate of over 50 percent, property crime, economic crime, violent crime and cybercrime are prominent. What measures need to be taken to ensure greater security was one of the questions put to our community. Read here what Krone readers think!

Clear words
The results of the survey come as no real surprise to the vast majority of our community members. dadenka formulates very clearly what the vast majority of Krone readers think: 

The ball isin the politicians' court 
 In terms of solving this problem, our users clearly see the government as being responsible. wolfgangw and Galaabend write that one of the reasons for the rising crime rate in Austria is the government's lack of competence. Jestersjake also calls for something to be done in view of the victims.

Out of the EU?
Politicians must therefore take action. Krone reader 2065626 calls on the current and future government to take concrete measures and train the executive accordingly.

We also wanted to know what the Krone community thinks about why more foreigners are committing crimes in Austria. harry74 provided us with a possible explanation. However, the focus is once again on the fact that the justice system is currently failing.

Justified objections
Some of our users also noted that the statistics are not accurate or meaningful enough. LinksHatMoral, for example, criticizes the fact that the survey was evaluated over too short a period of time and that the wider context needs to be considered. pinevot, on the other hand, complains that the data is not precise enough. In his/her opinion, more information would be needed here, particularly with regard to the proportion of foreign criminals. Liebereco takes a similar view and would like to see more specific information on Austria. 

Crime regardless of origin
Finally, Tyll-Ulenspiegel, who does not assume that there would be no crime in Austria if there were no foreigners here, presents an argument for reflection.
